Silence Room Selfridges London

As a calming retreat within Selfridges London, Alex Cochrane Architects designed the Silence Room to offer a meditative pause from the bustle of shopping. Inspired by founder Harry Gordon Selfridge’s original 1909 concept, the space was revived as part of the store’s "No Noise" initiative. Visitors access the room through a dimly lit corridor, arriving in a softly illuminated, cream-toned space encircled by oak benches. Though not entirely silent, the design encourages a sense of quiet and reflection. Minimalist and understated, the room contrasts sharply with the vibrant retail environment, offering shoppers a place to reset. The Silence Room blends thoughtful design with emotional respite—retail therapy in its most literal form.
